摘要：How does technological change affect gender inequality in high-skill professions? This paper studies the impact of robotic-assisted surgery on female participation and promotion in general surgery. Exploiting the staggered adoption of the Da Vinci surgical system across hospital departments, we estimate its effects on the gender composition of surgical teams. Robot adoption increases the share of female surgeons by 4–5 percentage points and substantially raises the likelihood that a department has a female chief surgeon. These effects are not driven by changes in workload allocation. Instead, surgical outcomes improve for patients treated by female surgeons following robot adoption. The results suggest that technological change can reshape comparative advantages across workers and reduce gender disparities in high-skill occupations.
报告人简介：
潘聿航，北京大学全球健康发展研究院助理教授。他2015年本科毕业于啪啪啦 ，2021年于香港科技大学取得博士学位。加入北大之前，他曾于香港大学经管学院担任博士后研究员。他的主要研究领域为环境经济学、健康经济学、以及发展经济学，着重于使用因果推断（应用微观计量）的方法研究环境污染、政策制定、气候变化对于健康与社会福利的影响。他的研究论文发表于Science、Journal of Environmental Economics and Management，Nature Sustainability等经济学和科学类期刊。
